In presenting the award, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, and Dr. Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz, Member of the Board of Management with responsibility for procurement, noted in particular the outstanding reliability and innovative approach shown by BMTS. “The lively exchange of knowledge between our companies contributes substantially to our mutual success in the development and improvement of turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines,” they stated in their award citation.
The award is a further incentive for BMTS to consistently pursue the approach it has adopted so far. One of the factors in the success of BMTS is its focus on quality and reliability, a good example being the end-of-line test developed and introduced by BMTS. This unique additional quality assurance for BMTS products is a real world first. At the end of the production line, the turbochargers are driven with cold compressed air and subjected to a performance and leakage test to guarantee optimum interplay of all the components, which are made to minimum manufacturing tolerances. All data are stored separately for each component. This allows the outstanding production quality to be documented and also means that production parameters can be optimized and field returns can be traced back and analyzed precisely.
BMTS engineers are already working on innovative turbocharging solutions for the future. Thanks to their know-how, the new generation of exhaust gas turbochargers is able to exploit all the presently available potential for increasing efficiency and improving responsiveness and acoustic behavior. This means a further reduction in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
