Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems starts subsidiary in China

Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems (BMTS) has founded a wholly owned subsidiary in the People’s Republic of China. The specialist in exhaust gas turbochargers is thus adapting to the continued strong market growth of turbocharged gasoline engines in currently the world’s largest automotive market.

The headquarters of the company, which is operating under the name Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems (Shanghai) Co. Ltd., are currently being built on the MAHLE premises at the Shanghai location. In a first stage, mainly turbochargers for gasoline engines will be produced for the local Chinese market in a new building comprising 5,000 square meters.

The new machinery will be fitted with high-precision equipment, just like the St. Michael plant in Austria, so that local production process steps can be adopted. About 100 new employees will be trained for this purpose at the main locations in Austria and Germany. The installed production capacity amounts to more than one million turbochargers per year. The start of series production is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2014. So far, three customer projects have already been acquired. The designated series production projects will produce exhaust gas turbochargers for modern gasoline engines with swept volumes ranging from 1.0 to 1.5 liters.

Alongside production, the new company will offer a fully comprehensive service range similar to that of the European parent company, in order to ensure optimal customer support. A team will be established on site for the respective areas of quality assurance and sales, as well as simulation, design, application, and validation. Furthermore, there will be a research and development center, which will have access to MAHLE’s existing engine test benches and laboratory facilities. Hot gas test benches will also be available at the new location. A special feature of the production at BMTS—as at St. Michael—is the integration of an end-of-line test in the assembly. Here, the turbocharger is checked for functionality, internal and external leak tightness, correct assembly, and a potential out-of-balance. With its cutting-edge production line and integrated end-of-line test, BMTS will continue to guarantee top quality in the People’s Republic of China.
